Yeah this is what we need

BAN THE PLASTIC BAG!!!!

Per Channel 10, State Rep. Maria Cimini has proposed a ban on the plastic shopping bag for all of RI.  This has already been enacted by Barrington. I get it, these things are annoying and take forever to decompose (if at all, who knew that a banana peel would not decompose in a landfill).  They can be recycled though, just most are not.  I am not against this at all, what I am against is this being put forth now while over 10% of the state is unemployed.  Do something about that first, then we can go after this stuff.

Lunchtime Interlude

Throwing Muses -  A band from RI

A little lunch time music for all of you.  Throwing Muses is a band from the City by the Sea (that is Newport for those not in the know) that was probably a little before its time.  True story, I replaced David Narcizo as the dishwasher at a french pastry shop downtown when he was heading across the pond to tour and record. I think this was is the 1986-87 time frame so they would have been supporting the first, self titled album (or cassette as the case may be in those days) and recording House Tornado.  At that age, I really did not get that whole scene to be honest, but as time went on, I really liked them a lot.  (Tanya went on to form Belly, who we will cover in a future post).

Anyway, here are a few selections while you much on your 5 dollar footlong at your desk.

Not Too Soon - probably more of a Belly tune really, but good "pop" for its day.

Shimmer (LIVE) - Post Tanya, this is where Kristen really started to shine (IMO)

Counting Backwards (LIVE) - This is the tune I think most people associate with them

Hate My Way (Live at the Rocket in Providence.. which begat Babyhead)  As an aside, look at that calendar for that club at that time.  Unbelievable.

See you tomorrow (hopefully, going to Boston for the day) with another RI original.

RI Institution of the Day

Why Allie's today when it is probably something that you should give up for Lent (it is Ash Wednesday people)?  There was a b-day in the household over the weekend and we had ordered a donut CAKE from them for the occasion   With winter storm Nemo, we were not sure they were going to be able to get it done for us.  Not only did they indeed get the cake completed, but they had attempted to call us to let us know that they would be able to (who does that?)  Driving there was not fun, but destroying the XL cake was.  Anyone who has the chance, stop by (their hours are strange, so make sure you check that out).  Their location is perfect for those summer days (remember those?) when you are heading to the beach.

Yep its the Big Blue Bug!  Since it is blue and Jet Blue is blue (I guess), they hooked up for a promotion for $20 fares to FLA.  They sold out pretty quickly.  I guess people do want to get the hell out of here.

Today's Links

Former Central Falls Mayor going to prison for hooking up his buddy with no-bid contracts for boarding up foreclosed houses.  His buddy made north of a million.. he got a free furnace!!! (Projo.com)

There is a bill out there to stop the toll on the Sakonnett River bridge that is meant to pay for the maintenance on a brand new bridge.  How is that for confidence in your workmanship? (Boston.com)

Yes!!! We are number one still.. in unemployment.  Keep in mind that the population of RI is only about a million.  And oh yeah if you are laid off good luck getting your unemployment check.. they laid those people off too.  (ABCNEWS.com)

And finally, a guy holds off two robbers with a shop-vac.  Sorry, if that were me, take whatever you want there guys.  (Turnto10.com)

Representative of the Day..

Speaker (Czar) of the House

Well we might as well start at the top right.  The guy to the right is the probably the most powerful politician in the state.  His district is District 4, a relatively nice part of Providence.  All legislation goes through him.  Yes, he is a democrat.  Yes, he just won re-election (per the Providence Journal) with a TOTAL of 3328 votes.  Tell me those people do not realize how good they have it.  Look at the voting record.  Nothing gets done without this guys vote.  Think about that for a moment.  Yeah, I thought the same thing

RI Image of the Day

This was the scene here over the weekend, where we had anything from 10 or so inches of snow near the coast, to almost 30 up in the "higher elevations" (a very relative term).  People still cannot get out of their driveways, and some schools are still not on (well I think they will be up and going as of tomorrow). It is scenes like this that make we wonder why I stay here.  (well that any many other reasons to be discussed over time)

In RI there is also a phenomenon that happens when the snow stops and people start making their way out into the wild again.  It is known as a RI igloo.  I am sure that there are other places in the northeast where this happens, but it seems to happen more here.  Not sure why, other than maybe it is possible that we are just a bit more lazy than most.  Next time you see one.. think of The Demotion Ocean State

This is an Accord right?  Not a Yukon.

What are we all about.. well RI of course

Well what is this about?  The goal for this small piece of cyber space is going to be a catch most (not all.. that would be impossible) for all things RI.  Yes we are the "biggest little state in the union", but to anyone that has ever lived here (or.. still lives here) it is a beast unto its own.  We have the most coastline in the New England but we also have one of the worst run government in the country.  RI has 39 cities and towns (and probably countless villages), but each one is its own little fiefdom, where the people in control try to retain it as if they are Henry VIII (or the Lannisters for that matter)

We will cover as much as possible, the good, the bad and the corrupt.  Local sports too!

Anyway come back once and a while and see what we become.
